DHAKA, Sept 5, 2026 (BSS) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir today urged students to build their lives on honesty, morality and human values while remaining vigilant against drug abuse and excessive dependence on technology.

“You must always remain alert so that the deadly grip of drugs cannot touch you. Remember, drugs are a death trap, “he said. 

At the same time, he cautioned students against excessive addiction to mobile phones, social media and internet games, saying such dependence can be as harmful as addiction to other intoxicating substances.

He was speaking as chief guest at a scholarship award ceremony for meritorious children of police personnel at Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh. 

The Police Headquarters organised the event to award Bangladesh Police Merit Scholarships to children of police members who secured GPA-5 in the SSC, HSC and equivalent examinations in 2024 and 2025. The scholarships are funded by the Bangladesh Police Welfare Trust.

The police chief particularly warned students against falling prey to drugs through temporary curiosity or provocation.

 “You will use technology, but be careful that technology does not end up using you,” the IGP said, urging the students to use digital platforms responsibly and maintain control over their screen time.

He also called on them to obey the laws of the country and encourage others to do the same.

Greeting the students for securing the GPA-5, the IGP said, “Talent can take you forward, but honesty, humanity and moral values make a person truly great.”  

The police chief told the students that the recognition they received was not merely an award but also recognition of their talent and hard work, as well as a symbol of the police administration's confidence in their future potential.

“Being a good student is not enough; you must also become good human beings,” he said, urging them to cultivate humility, empathy, a sense of responsibility, discipline and patriotism alongside academic knowledge.

The IGP expressed hope that the students' achievements would serve as a foundation for building a more beautiful, prosperous and humane Bangladesh in the future.

Speaking at the event, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed congratulated the scholarship recipients and urged them to continue working hard to achieve sustained success. 

He advised them to reduce screen time and devote greater attention to their studies.

Additional IGP (Administration) A K M Awlad Hossain, who chaired the programme, urged the students to demonstrate their talent in every sphere of life, stay away from wrongdoing and work for the welfare of the country and its people.

He also advised them to engage regularly in physical exercise and sports alongside academic pursuits for their mental and physical development.

Four scholarship recipients — Kazi Md Tanan Hossain, Syeda Sabiha Musharrat Mumu, Md Adnan Zawad and Mustaina Manzur — expressed their feelings at the ceremony and pledged to work for the welfare of the country and its people. 

Additional DIG Shampa Yasmin and Police Inspector Sheikh Farukuzzaman also spoke on behalf of the guardians of the scholarship recipients.

A total of 2,113 students received Bangladesh Police Merit Scholarships for their outstanding results in 2024 and 2025.

Of them, 801 students who secured GPA-5 in the 2024 SSC examinations and 272 who achieved GPA-5 in the 2024 HSC examinations received scholarships. In 2025, 845 SSC and 195 HSC GPA-5 achievers were selected for the scholarships.

The scholarships were formally handed over to 360 students based in Dhaka at Saturday's ceremony, while the remaining recipients will receive their scholarships through the offices of the respective district superintendents of police.
