DHAKA, Sept 3, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecasted in the monthly weather outlook that Short-term flooding may occur in the northern, northeastern, and southeastern regions of the country due to monsoon heavy rainfall.

It also says, the water level of the major rivers of the country may increase overall in September, while rainfall is likely to be below normal all over the country.
 
"1-3 Low Pressure Systems are likely to form over the Bay of Bengal and one of them may intensify into a Monsoon Depression," said the Long Range Weather Forecast for September 2026 issued recently.

Thunderstorms are likely to occur on 3-5 days over the country during this month. Both day and night temperatures are likely to remain above normal over the country.

Two to three mild (36-37.9)°C to (38-39.9)°C moderate heatwaves are likely to occur over the country during this month.

A meeting of the Expert Team on Long-Range Weather Forecasting was held on 01 September 2026 at the Storm Warning Centre in Dhaka. 

During the meeting, various data and information for August 2026 were analysed . 

According to official data, normal rainfall (-5.7%) was recorded over Bangladesh during August 2026. Rainfall was recorded above normal at Chattogram and Mymensingh divisions, normal at Sylhet and Barishal divisions, and below normal elsewhere over the divisions. 

During August 2026, four low-pressure areas formed over the Bay of Bengal, two of which intensified into Monsoon Depressions. 

Due to the active southwest monsoon and the influence of the Well-Marked Lows and Monsoon Depressions, heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred at many places across the country during the month. 

The rainfall was also accompanied by gusty and squally winds and thunderstorms. 

The highest daily rainfall of the month was 198 mm, recorded at Hatiya on 5 August 2026. 

A mild heatwave affected some areas of the country during 10-12, 22, & 26-30 August 2026. The highest maximum temperature of the month was 37.0°C, recorded at Rajshahi on 27 August 2026, while the lowest minimum temperature was 22.6°C recorded at Narayanganj on 7 August 2026. 

The monthly maximum, minimum, and mean temperatures were above normal by 0.8°C, 0.5°C, and 0.7°C, respectively. 

Overall, rainfall, observed temperature, heatwave conditions, thunderstorm activity, agro-meteorological conditions, and river conditions during August 2026 were generally consistent with the monthly weather outlook.
