DHAKA, Aug 11, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Power and Energy Aninda Islam Amit today said the government is implementing short and long-term plans to address the country's power and energy crisis.

Speaking at a discussion titled "Ways to Overcome the Crisis and Potential of the Energy Sector" at Dhaka Club, he said a 10-year action plan for the power and energy sectors would be presented in parliament, incorporating views from political parties, the opposition, experts and stakeholders.

He said the government is strengthening its role in the LPG sector and considering importing LPG directly using existing infrastructure and skilled manpower to ensure supply and price stability. 

Land has also been identified at Matarbari for an LNG terminal, while necessary infrastructure is being prioritised to increase LNG imports and ensure long-term energy security, he added.

The state minister said the country's daily gas demand exceeds 1,200 million cubic feet, while domestic production is declining.

The government is therefore pursuing increased exploration and production alongside imports, he said. 

A bidding round for new gas exploration is expected to conclude by November, he said.

He also stressed the importance of coal-fired plants, skilled manpower development, transparent procurement and prioritising national interests.

He expressed optimism that coordinated initiatives, domestic resource exploration, expanded import infrastructure and renewable energy development would bring positive changes to the sector.
