DINAJPUR, Aug 9, 2026 (BSS) - Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Prof. Dr. A Z M Zahid Hossain today inaugurated the construction of a long-awaited four-lane road at Hili land port in Dinajpur, aiming to ease traffic congestion and boost trade through the important land port.

The construction work is being implemented under the supervision of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD).

At the inauguration, the minister said the resumption of the project fulfils a longstanding demand of the people of Hili.

"We had promised the people of Hili that we would complete the unfinished works if we came to power. This is part of fulfilling that promise," he said.

He said a large volume of goods is imported and exported through Hili land port every day, while growing port operations have increased pressure on local roads.

Completion of the four-lane road will reduce transportation time and hassles, facilitate port operations and expand trade and commerce, he said, adding that it would also create new employment opportunities and benefit the local economy.

Dinajpur RHD Executive Engineer Md Asaduzzaman said Tk 34 crore has been estimated for the project.

He said a 2.58-kilometre stretch from the Women's College to Zero Point and from Hili Charmatha intersection to the gate of Panama Hili Port Link Limited will be constructed as a four-lane road.

The road in the port area will be 50 feet wide and constructed with durable materials, he added.

Hakimpur Upazila BNP President Ferdous Rahman expressed hope that the project would significantly reduce longstanding traffic congestion and make communication with the port easier, faster and safer.
