Work unitedly for people's welfare: Housing Minister

DHAKA, Aug 08, 2026 (BSS) - Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher today called upon people, irrespective of personal and political interests, to work together for the welfare of the people and the development of their local areas.
 
"We are working with a target to ensure that there will be no unpaved roads in Barura within the next two to three years," The minister said.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a function marking the assumption of office and inauguration of the newly-elected executive committee of the Barura Upazila Janakalyan Samity, Dhaka, and its annual general meeting (AGM) at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDE,B) Bhaban in the city's Kakrail area.

The minister said the Barura Upazila Janakalyan Samity should be developed as a non-political and welfare-oriented platform by involving people irrespective of political affiliation, religion and social background.He said initiatives have been taken to bring around 300 roads, both big and small, in Barura upazila under various development projects.


The minister also said several important road projects have been undertaken to improve connectivity across the upazila, particularly along the east-west and north-south corridors.

On education and healthcare, he said an initiative has been taken to establish a technical college in Barura, with a target to complete the tender process by the end of this year.

The minister said various measures are also being taken to improve healthcare services in the area, including the establishment of a 101-bed hospital.

Referring to the votes and blessings of the people, Zakaria said he is committed to remaining accountable to the people and regularly informing them about the progress of development activities.

He sought cooperation from people of all walks of life for the overall development of Barura.

Barura Upazila Janakalyan Samity President Md Shah Alam presided over the programme, while its General Secretary Mohammad Monir Hossain was present at the event.

Besides, Professor Dr Md Ruhul Amin, Abdul Haque, Manindra Kishore Majumder, Nurul Islam Milon, Engineer Atikur Rahman and Md Abdus Samad, among others, also attended the event, highlighting the activities, achievements and future plans of the organisation.

The AGM later discussed the organisation's activities and achievements, future plans and various initiatives aimed at promoting the welfare of the people of Barura.
