DHAKA, Aug 6, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has observed July Mass Uprising Day with due solemnity, paying tribute to the martyrs of the July uprising and reaffirming the ideals of democracy, justice and national unity.

The programme, held on Wednesday, was attended by Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia, representatives of social and cultural organisations, journalists, community leaders and officials and staff of the Bangladesh High Commission, according to a press release received here today.

The observance began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of messages from the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Two documentaries, "July's Letter" and "Stories of the Rooftop Sky", produced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to mark the historic day, were screened.

Addressing the discussion, Bangladesh High Commissioner to Malaysia Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury paid profound tribute to the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising and expressed gratitude to all those who were injured and participated in the movement.

He described the July Mass Uprising as a landmark chapter in Bangladesh's national history in the struggle for justice, democracy and human dignity.

The high commissioner said the uprising was the culmination of the long-standing aspirations and accumulated grievances of pro-democracy people and stressed the importance of preserving the unprecedented national unity forged during the movement.

Leaders of the Bangladeshi community, political and social organisations, journalists and other distinguished personalities also addressed the discussion.

The speakers recalled the contributions of students, teachers, workers, farmers, rickshaw pullers, physicians, lawyers, journalists, intellectuals, homemakers, women, children, cultural activists and businesspeople in transforming the anti-discrimination student movement into a nationwide mass uprising in July 2024.

They paid tribute to the martyrs, including Abu Sayeed, Mohammad Wasim Akram and Mugdha, saying their sacrifices had opened a new chapter in Bangladesh's democratic journey.

The speakers also called for strengthening national unity in the greater interest of the country.

The programme concluded with a cultural performance by two students of Sunway University, followed by special prayers seeking eternal peace for the souls of the martyrs, speedy recovery of the injured and continued peace, prosperity and development of Bangladesh.
