BARISHAL, July 28, 2026 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today called upon the students to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities to foster their mental growth and creative potential alongside textbook-based education. 

He emphasized that replacing intimidation and harsh discipline with a friendly approach toward students would help nurture a confident and creative generation.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a ceremony of sports equipment and tree saplings distribution for educational institutions, organized by the Upazila administration at the Gournadi Upazila Parishad Auditorium here.

He said students should not be confined solely to studies, examinations, and academic results, instead they should be encouraged to take part in sports.

Through sports, Swapon said, children develop creative thinking, leadership skills, the courage to accept both victory and defeat, and strong moral character. 

Regular participation in sports also contributes to physical well-being while enhancing self-confidence, discipline, and problem-solving abilities, he added.

Addressing teachers and parents, the minister said that the future of the next generation largely depends on the competence, qualifications, dedication, and hard work of teachers. 

He also urged parents and teachers to move away from the long-held belief that strict discipline is the only way to raise children.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Ibrahim chaired the event while Conservator of Forests of the Barishal Coastal Circle Dr. Molla was present.

Under the "One Student, One Tree" programme, the minister distributed five tree saplings and sports equipment to the heads of 131 primary schools, 28 secondary schools, and 14 madrasa institutions in Gournadi Upazila.
