RAJSHAHI, July 27, 2026 (BSS)- Professor Akhtar Hossain of the Department of
Civil Engineering has been appointed as the new Pro-Vice Chancellor (Pro-VC)
of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).
The appointment was announced in a notification issued by the Secondary and
Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education with the approval of
the Chancellor of the university.
The information was announced in a notification signed by the Deputy
Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of
Education, Dr. Saiful Islam, today.
The appointment has been made in accordance with Section 21(1) of the
Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology Act, 2003, with the
approval of the President and Chancellor of the university.
According to the notification, Prof Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain will serve as Pro-
VC for four years from the date of his joining or until his scheduled date of
retirement, whichever comes first.
It also states that he will receive salary, allowances and other benefits as
determined by the rules.
During his tenure, he will have to exercise the powers vested in the Pro-Vice
Chancellor and perform his duties in accordance with the laws and regulations
of the university.
The notification also mentions that the President and Chancellor may cancel
this appointment at any time in the public interest, if necessary.
Prof Dr. Md. Akhtar Hossain is a senior teacher in the Department of Civil
Engineering at RUET. He has long been involved in teaching, research and
administrative activities at the university.
Concerned parties have expressed hope that his appointment will further
accelerate the administrative activities of the university.
It is worth mentioning that the last person to serve as Pro-VC at RUET was
Prof Dr. Mortuza Ali of the Department of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering (EEE). He was appointed as Pro-VC on October 12, 2010 and
completed his four-year term on October 11, 2014.
After that, the post of Pro-VC at the university remained vacant for almost
12 years. With the appointment of a new Pro-VC after this long time, an
important vacancy in the administration of RUET has been filled.
Those concerned with the university believe that under the leadership of the
new Pro-VC, more momentum will come to education, research, administrative
coordination and ongoing development activities.
In particular, the appointment to this post, which had been vacant for a long
time, will play a helpful role in making the university's policy-making
activities more effective and coordinated.
