BAGERHAT, July 25, 2026 (BSS) - Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain today said the government is implementing various plans to make healthcare services more accessible and ensure they reach people's doorsteps across the country.
He made the remarks after paying a surprise visit to Morelganj Upazila Health Complex in Bagerhat this morning.
The minister arrived at the hospital around 11:00am and expressed dissatisfaction over its overall management. He also reviewed the quality of healthcare services, the presence of expired medicines, the poor quality of food served to patients and the shortage of physicians.
Sakhawat spent nearly two and a half hours inspecting different departments of the hospital and interacting with officials. "The people elected us through their votes. We have a great responsibility towards them. Their overall welfare rests on our shoulders," he said.
"There is no point in making excuses by referring to the past. We want to ensure healthcare services reach the doorsteps of people across Bangladesh," he said.
The minister said the government does not want anyone to die without receiving treatment. "We want to ensure healthcare services for poor people with the resources we have," he said, announcing that the existing 50-bed Morelganj Upazila Health Complex would be upgraded to a 101-bed hospital.
Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten, Superintendent of Police Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Habibullah and Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Kamal Hossain Mufti, among others, accompanied the minister during the visit.
Later, Sakhawat visited Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex, where he announced measures to establish a modern operation theatre, address the shortage of doctors and nurses, strengthen laboratory and pathology services, and construct a permanent hospital building.
