BAGERHAT, July 24, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Dr Sheikh Faridul Islam has said that water tanks will be delivered to every house in phases to save rainwater to resolve the drinking water crisis in the coastal region. 

At the same time, government ponds will be renovated and developed as a reserve freshwater reservoir so that the people of the coastal areas get the benefit of safe drinking water, he said while speaking as the chief guest at a programme here today. 

The Climate Trust Fund organized the event to distribute water tanks among poor families under the Rainwater Harvesting Programme at the Rampal Upazila Public Health Engineering Department premises in Bagerhat this afternoon.

 “There has been a severe shortage of drinking water in the coastal Rampal and Mongla areas for a long time. To address this crisis, 3,000 water tanks are being distributed initially under the Climate Trust Fund. In continuation of this, 82 tanks have been distributed today,” said the state minister.  

He said, “The government is working on a permanent solution for safe water for the people of the coastal areas. Government ponds will be renovated and converted into reserved freshwater reservoirs. Fish farming will not be allowed in these ponds, so that the common people can get the benefit of safe drinking water.”

Upazila Executive Officer Ms. Tamanna Ferdousi, Executive Engineer of Bagerhat Public Health Engineering Department Jayanta Mallick, Deputy Assistant Engineer of Rampal Upazila Public Health Engineering Department Imran Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Rampal Police Station Md. Rajib Al Rashid, Upazila BNP President Hafizur Rahman Tuhin, Former Member Secretary Kazi Zahidul Islam Zahid and local dignitaries were present at the event.
