BAU launches plant nutrition research laboratory with JICA support

MYMENSINGH, July 23, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has launched a new Plant Nutrition Research Laboratory under the SUNRISE Project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), marking a significant milestone in advancing plant nutrition research in the country.

The laboratory was officially inaugurated today at a ceremony organized by the Department of Soil Science.

BAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan formally opened the newly established laboratory as the chief guest.

Following the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor toured the facility alongside university faculty members, researchers, JICA representatives, and project officials, expressing optimism about its potential contribution to agricultural research.

Later, the Joint Coordination Committee of the BAU–JICA SUNRISE Project held a meeting to discuss the operational plans and future activities of the Plant Nutrition Research Laboratory.

The project is being led by Professor Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam of the Department of Soil Science, who serves as the Project Director.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Islam said the establishment of the laboratory would expand opportunities for advanced research in plant nutrition and soil science. 

He added that the facility is expected to play a vital role in strengthening agricultural education and research while supporting the development of modern, technology-driven agriculture in Bangladesh.
