Govt continues response to natural disasters in affected districts

DHAKA, July 19, 2026 (BSS) – The government has continued its response to the situation caused by natural disasters, including flash floods and landslides, in the country's southeastern and northeastern districts, while field information offices are conducting public awareness campaigns.

According to the latest reports from the regional and district information offices under the Directorate of Mass Communication and the Department of Information, operating under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, district and upazila information offices have continued public awareness activities in the disaster-affected areas.

According to the latest report from the Chattogram Regional Information Office and the District Information Office, Local Warning Signal No. 3 has been advised in the latest weather forecast, according to a PID handout issued here today.

As floodwaters have inundated the Chattogram metropolitan area and all 15 upazilas of the district, the District Information Office has continued emergency public awareness campaigns through road campaigns and public announcements. These campaigns focus on the postponement of HSC examinations due to the flood situation, advisories to avoid unsafe houses damaged by floods or heavy rainfall, maintaining health precautions, preventing snakebites, ensuring the safety of children, women, older persons and persons with disabilities, refraining from making financial transactions while receiving relief, and avoiding electric poles and live wires to prevent accidents.

In Khagrachhari district, there has been no rainfall and no new incidents of landslides or hill collapses have been reported. Floodwaters have receded from most areas, although normalcy has yet to return. Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the Khagrachhari District Information Office has been disseminating awareness messages on landslides, floods and post-flood safety measures.

According to the report, the number of affected unions, including Cox's Bazar municipality, stands at 74. The overall flood situation has improved. The district recorded 58 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours, and no new incidents of landslides or hill collapses have been reported. Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the District Information Office has continued awareness campaigns and public announcements on landslides, floods and post-flood safety measures.

The report said the situation in Rangamati is currently normal. Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the Rangamati District Information Office has been conducting road campaigns to raise public awareness and encourage people living in landslide-prone areas to move to safe shelters.

According to the latest information received, the disaster situation in Bandarban is currently normal. The district recorded 30 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours. The water levels of the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers are below the danger level. Floodwaters have receded, and people are returning home from shelters. Since the onset of heavy rainfall, the District Information Office has continued awareness campaigns and film screenings on landslides, floods and post-flood safety measures.

According to the latest reports from the Sylhet Regional Information Office and the district information offices of Sunamganj and Habiganj, Sylhet district recorded 29 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours. With increased rainfall, water levels in the Surma, Kushiyara, Sarigoain and Piyain rivers have started to rise. Although the Surma River is flowing below the danger level, the Kushiyara River at the Fenchuganj point is flowing above the danger level. There is no risk of fresh inundation or major, prolonged flooding, though some low-lying riverside areas are experiencing short-term flooding.

The overall flood situation in Sunamganj district remains stable. However, river water levels have begun to rise due to increased rainfall. The Kushiyara River at the Markuli point is flowing above the danger level.

The overall flood situation in Habiganj district also remains stable. River water levels are below the danger level, and there is no risk of fresh inundation. Habiganj Sadar, Bahubal and Baniachang were among the three upazilas inundated by flash floods caused by the overflowing Khowai River. As rainfall has decreased, floodwaters in the affected areas have started to recede. The district recorded 4.5 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours, and no landslides have been reported. The District Information Office has continued its public awareness activities.

According to the report, the overall flood situation in Moulvibazar district remains stable. The Monu River is flowing below the danger level. Fifteen unions have been inundated. In addition, a breach has developed in a river protection embankment in Kamalganj upazila. The flood situation in five unions of Moulvibazar Sadar upazila is gradually improving. The District Information Office has continued awareness campaigns during and after the flood period.
