DHAKA, June 27, 2026 (BSS) - National University (NU) has taken a groundbreaking initiative to tackle climate change risks and build eco-friendly green campuses.

Under the new decision, a target has been set to plant 2 crore saplings over the next five years through 40 lakh students enrolled under the university.

The decision, alongside a package of modern and career-oriented plans, was logically approved today at the university's 28th Senate Session held at the campus auditorium in Gazipur.

National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.S.M. Amanullah presided over the session.

In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor stated that a special initiative has been launched to build a 'Green Campus' to make National University fully technology-minded, modern, and environment-friendly. As part of this, every student of the country's largest higher education family will be involved in this green revolution. By planting and nurturing 2 crore trees nationwide over the next five years, students will play a direct role in protecting the environment.

Along with environmental protection, the session announced that English and ICT courses will be made compulsory at the undergraduate level to prepare students for the global market. Furthermore, decisions were made to introduce opportunities for learning seven foreign languages, including Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean, through a 'Multi-Language Learning Institute', and to launch an international-standard apprenticeship program to train 50,000 interns.

To implement these plans, the session unanimously approved a main budget of Taka 801 crore 4 lakh 60 thousand for the upcoming 2026-2027 fiscal year.

The university's Treasurer, Professor Dr. A.T.M. Zafrul Azam, presented the budget.

Senate Chairman Professor Dr. A.S.M. Amanullah said, "In this era of artificial intelligence and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the university's responsibility is not just to confer degrees. We believe the future Bangladesh will be shaped by a generation that will not be job seekers, but rather job creators, leading the change."

Senate members including State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, and Members of Parliament Imran Ahmed Chowdhury, Wares Ali Mamun, Abul Hossain Khan, and G.M. Siraj participated in the session.
