TANGAIL, June 20, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku today said that everyone who fought against fascism must work unitedly to build a discrimination-free Bangladesh.
"Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman set a unique example of patriotism. He did not just declare independence, but personally participated in the Liberation War and led it from the front. After the country achieved independence, he returned to his regular duties. He had no greed for power," he said.
Tuku said Ziaur Rahman rescued the country from famine and steered it towards food self-sufficiency, enabling Bangladesh to export food after meeting domestic demand.
He made these remarks as the chief guest while addressing a discussion titled "Life, Work, and Ideals" organized by the Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University at the university's third academic building, marking the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of independence, introducer of multi-party democracy, and the architect of modern Bangladesh.
The State Minister further mentioned that in the absence of Shaheed Zia, Begum Khaleda Zia endured torture and oppression for 17 long years to work for democracy. "No one has been able to call BNP as a fascist party, nor will anyone be able to do so in the future," he added.
He added, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, everyone must work to fulfill public expectations upholding the slogan 'Korbo Kaj, Gorbo Desh-Sobar Age Bangladesh' (We will work, build the country - Bangladesh above all) ahead.
Referring to the university, he said, "I will continue to work with my respected teacher, the current Vice-Chancellor, for the welfare of this university."
Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan spoke as the chief speaker. Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr ABM Shahidul Islam was present as the special speaker.
