JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, June 16, 2026 (BSS) - The syndicate, the highest decision-making body of Jahangirnagar University (JU), finalised disciplinary actions against teachers and officials accused of involvement in attacks on students during the July Uprising 2024, while also reviewing and revising earlier penalties imposed on students following appeals.

The decisions were taken at a nearly 12-hour-long syndicate meeting held at the council room of the university's new administrative building on Monday.

Syndicate President and Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan briefed journalists on the decisions around 4:30 am on Tuesday at the Vice-Chancellor's conference room.

He said the decisions were made following extensive review of reports submitted by investigation and structured committees formed over incidents that occurred on July 14, 15 and 17, 2024.

"Separate hearings, witness testimonies and verification of evidence were conducted for each accused person to ensure justice," he added.

According to the decisions, Prof Hosne Ara of the Department of History was issued a warning.

Prof Israfil Ahmed Rangan of the Department of Drama and Dramatics had his salary reduced to the initial scale of his current post.

Assistant Professor Mohibur Rouf Shaibal of the same department was demoted to the post of lecturer.

Prof Nazmul Hassan Talukder of the Department of Bangla had two annual increments cancelled and was placed in a lower pay scale.

The syndicate, however, exempted several faculty members including Assistant Professor Palash Saha of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Prof Shafi Mohammad Tarek of Environmental Sciences Department, Prof Zahirul Islam Khondkar of the Physics Department, Prof Mohammad Sayadur Rahman and Associate Prof Manir Uddin Sikder of the Public Administration Department, Prof Mohammad Jahangir Alam of the Economics Department, and Prof Anwar Khasru Parvez of the Microbiology Department from the allegations.

Lecturer Kanan Kumar Sen of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems had two annual increments cancelled.

Former Proctor Prof Alamgir Kabir had his salary reduced to the initial scale of his current post and was declared ineligible to hold administrative responsibilities for five years.

Prof A A Mamun of the Department of Physics was warned and barred from administrative duties for the same period.

Associate Professor A S M Firoz-ul-Hasan of the Department of Government and Politics had his salary reduced to the initial scale, was allowed to apply for promotion after two years, and was barred from administrative responsibilities for five years.

Similarly, Prof Bashir Ahmed had his salary reduced to the initial scale, was allowed to seek grade advancement after two years, and was barred from administrative responsibilities for five years.

Associate Professor Mehedi Iqbal of the Department of Geography and Environment was sent into compulsory retirement.

Prof Tajuddin Sikdar of the Department of Public Health and Informatics had his salary reduced to the initial scale and was allowed to apply for grade advancement after two years, and declared ineligible for administrative duties for five years.

Former Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Mohammad Mostafa Feeroz had his salary reduced to Grade-2 and was barred from administrative responsibilities for five years.

All of them were known as pro-Awami League-leaning teachers within the university premises.

Among the two accused officials, Assistant Registrar Rajib Chakraborty was relieved of the allegations, while Deputy Registrar Nahidur Rahman Khan was demoted to the post of Assistant Registrar and will be eligible to apply for promotion after two years.

The Vice-Chancellor also said the syndicate decided to form three separate structured committees to investigate the roles of the then Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq and Treasurer Prof Rasheda Akhtar, whose names appeared in the preliminary investigation report.

Besides, in a separate appeal-wise review, the syndicate revised several earlier disciplinary decisions related to attacks on students stemming from the same July Uprising 2024 incidents.

Among eight students initially expelled for two years, the duration was reduced in six cases following reconsideration. In matters related to certificate cancellation, some students were fully exempted while others had their penalties modified to one-year or two-year terms.

In total, five students were fully relieved of earlier sanctions following the appeal process, while others remained under modified disciplinary measures. However, some earlier decisions, including certain suspensions and penalties, were kept unchanged.

JU VC said the final outcome reflects a mixed pattern of relief and continuation of disciplinary actions, and detailed case-wise notifications, including names and specific orders, will be issued later.

The students involved in these cases were affiliated with banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of banned Bangladesh Awami League, and were accused in connection with the same incidents during the July Uprising on the JU campus.
