Voluntary actions of Lions Int'l for poor are unique in humanitarian service: JS Speaker

DHAKA, June 13, 2026 (BSS) - Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Hafiz Uddin 
Ahmad, Bir Bikram, today said the voluntary activities of Lions Clubs 
International in supporting underprivileged and disadvantaged people are 
unique examples of humanitarian service.

"Lions Clubs International is one of the largest voluntary service 
organisations in the world and has been carrying out its humanitarian 
activities in Bangladesh in a highly organised manner," he said while 
addressing the 39th Annual Convention-2026 of Lions Clubs International 
Multiple District 315 Bangladesh as the chief guest held at a hotel in the 
capital.

The convention was presided over by Council Chairperson of Multiple District 
315 Bangladesh Lion Md. Ashraf Hossain Khan Hira while Convention Chairperson 
Lion Sabina Siddika delivered the welcome address.

International Director of Lions Clubs International Lion Nazmul Haque spoke 
as a special guest on the occasion.

Distinguished Lions leaders from home and abroad also addressed the 
gathering, said a press release.

The JS Speaker said voluntary organisations like Lions Clubs International 
play a significant role alongside the government in the development of 
society and the state.

"The contributions of Lions members to nation-building have opened new 
horizons in human welfare," he said, adding that the mutual goodwill, 
discipline and etiquette demonstrated by Lions members are exemplary for 
society.

He noted that Lions Clubs International, operating under the motto "We 
Serve," has been making significant contributions to humanity worldwide for 
more than a century.

According to the Speaker, the organisation currently operates in more than 
200 countries and geographical areas with nearly 1.4 million members. 

Through its extensive network, Lions Clubs International carries out a wide 
range of humanitarian activities, including vision care, hunger relief, 
environmental protection, diabetes awareness, support for children with 
cancer, youth development programmes and emergency humanitarian assistance 
during disasters.

During the programme, the Speaker formally inaugurated the convention and 
unveiled its souvenir publication.

Later, commemorative crests were presented to distinguished guests while 
individuals and institutions were honoured for their outstanding 
contributions to the Lions movement.

Speakers at the convention highlighted the role of Lions Clubs International 
in promoting humanitarian welfare, social responsibility and community 
service. 

They stressed the need to further expand the organisation's service 
activities and called upon Lions members to play a more active role in 
improving the lives of poor, helpless and underprivileged people.

Lions leaders from different parts of the country, former international 
directors, district governors, club representatives, members, distinguished 
guests and media personnel attended the convention, among others.
