ROOPPUR, Pabna, June 12, 2026 (BSS) - Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam today said investing in nuclear technology is essentially an investment in national development, innovation, and the welfare of the people.

He emphasized that a successful nuclear programme requires not only technology and infrastructure but also strong institutions, skilled human resources, an effective regulatory framework, transparency, accountability, and, above all, a robust culture of safety and security.

The minister made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled “High-Level Strategic Roundtable Discussion: Nuclear Energy – Strategy, Realities and Bangladesh's Path Forward” held at a resort in Ishwardi, here.

The minister said Bangladesh achieved a historic milestone on April 28, 2026, by loading nuclear fuel into the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

He described this as not only a technological achievement but also a landmark national moment. Through this accomplishment, Bangladesh joined the ranks of countries possessing advanced and sophisticated technologies, he said.

Anam said nuclear energy provides reliable, large-scale, low-carbon electricity around the clock. Unlike many other energy sources, it is not dependent on weather conditions, he said, adding that nuclear power strengthens energy security, promotes industrial development, and contributes to environmental sustainability.

Once fully operational, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will add approximately 2,400 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, he mentioned.

He further noted that the value of nuclear technology extends far beyond electricity generation. Nuclear science plays an important role in healthcare through cancer diagnosis and treatment, in agriculture through the development of improved crop varieties, and in industry through advanced applications, he said.

It also contributes significantly to food security, water management, environmental monitoring, and scientific research, he said.

The minister called upon universities, research institutions and training centers to place greater emphasis on nuclear science, nuclear engineering, and related fields of study.

The Science and Technology Ministry and the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) with the cooperation of the International Atomic Energy Agency organized the seminar.

Science and Technology Secretary Md. Anwar Hossain chaired it while senior government officials, including Dr. Md. Kabir Hossain, Project Director of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant were also present.
