KHULNA, May 24, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna University has launched a science-based and thematic tree plantation programme aimed at transforming its campus into an eco-friendly, climate-resilient and aesthetically improved green space, aligned with the government's national afforestation drive.
The government has planned a large-scale plantation initiative over the next five years to strengthen environmental protection and enhance climate resilience across the country.
In line with these priorities, the university authorities have adopted a structured afforestation plan and formed a committee to oversee its implementation.
A meeting of the committee was held this morning at the university's administrative building conference room, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim.
The meeting was informed that a five-year integrated plantation plan, prepared based on the committee's recommendations, was submitted to the Ministry of Education Bangladesh on April 1.
It was also informed that State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam formally inaugurated the plantation programme on April 17 under the approved plan.
Plantation activities have already begun in phases in designated areas of the campus.
Under the initiative, both the main campus and the Paikgacha offshore campus have been brought under the programme to ensure ecological balance and seasonal biodiversity.
The meeting was told that this year trees will be planted along roads, canal banks and open spaces across the university.
To enhance campus beauty, flowering species such as Sonalu, Bon Sonalu, Kadam and Parijat will be planted.
A plan has also been taken to develop a natural biofencing system between the TSC and the central mosque, where one row of Conocarpus and another row of Chapa species will be planted.
The meeting further discussed planting large-canopy trees along the eastern boundary of the playground, along with indigenous fruit-bearing trees beside the road adjacent to the central field.
Addressing the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim said the initiative aims to build a greener, environmentally friendly and visually appealing campus in response to the Prime Minister's call.
He emphasized the importance of selecting climate-resilient species suitable for Bangladesh's seasonal diversity and environmental conditions.
