MEHERPUR May 24, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death for raping a 9-year-old girl in Gangni upazila of the district in 2025.

Judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Md. Tajul Islam pronounced the verdict this afternoon.

The convicted man is Shakil Hossain, 24, son of Abdal Hossain of Chandpur village in Gangni upazila of the district.

Public Prosecutor of the court Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin confirmed the matter.

According to prosecution, on June 16, 2025, when a 4th grade girl from Chandpur village in Gangni upazila was going to give food to her father in the field next to her house, rapist Shakil Hossain threatened the child and took her to a jute field and raped her. 

Later, when the girl returned home and informed her family about the rape, the father of the raped child, Esanul Haque, filed a rape case with Gangni Police Station. 

After filing the case, police arrested the rapist and sent him to jail. 11 witnesses testified in the case in person and virtually through video calls. Based on the evidence, the court sentenced rapist Shakib Hossain to death.
