Citizen’s Platform on SDG meets Deputy Speaker

DHAKA, May 17, 2026 (BSS) - Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal has said parliament members can play an important role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh.

Kamal made the remarks when a delegation of the Citizens’ Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh led by its convener Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya made a courtesy call on Deputy Speaker at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban here today.

The Deputy Speaker said he had long been working for minority communities, human rights and marginalized groups even before becoming a member of parliament, said a press release.

“As a result, the Garo and Hajong communities unequivocally voted for me in the 13th parliamentary election,” he said, adding that he remains committed to alleviating the sufferings of these communities by integrating them into the mainstream.

Barrister Kayser Kamal said parliamentary caucuses are highly significant in the Westminster system of governance. He observed that forming a caucus comprising lawmakers interested in achieving the SDGs could help build a humane and inclusive Bangladesh.

He also noted that the young members of the current parliament are continuously working towards building a developed Bangladesh.

The delegation informed the Deputy Speaker that the Citizens’ Platform works to support activities for the welfare of poor and marginalized communities, including ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The delegation also stressed the need for forming an independent parliamentary caucus.

During the meeting, both sides expressed consensus on working for quality education, public services, good governance and the welfare of minority communities.

Core group members of the Citizens’ Platform Professor Mustafizur Rahman, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, general secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum Sanjeeb Drong, Hasin Jahan; Zakir Hossain; Ashrafun Nahar Mishti, executive director of Women with Disabilities Development Foundation; and Tarannum Zinan were present.
