SIRAJGANJ, May 15, 2026 (BSS) - Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today said children must be encouraged to participate in sports alongside their studies to protect them from drug addiction.

He urged ensuring at least two hours of daily sports activities for children and adolescents to help them grow up in a healthy and sound environment.

The minister made the remarks while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament for boys and girls-2026 as the chief guest at Shaheed Shamsuddin Stadium in Sirajganj this morning. The event was organized by the District Primary Education Office.

Mahmood said although many high-rise buildings are being constructed in urban areas, there is a shortage of adequate open spaces for children to play, which is hampering their physical and mental development. As a result, many children are becoming vulnerable to various negative activities, he added.

He also said every school in the district should arrange sports activities at least one day a week. Parents, he added, must play a more responsible role in promoting sports and health awareness instead of allowing children to become involved in drugs.

“A generation has already suffered due to addiction. Now we must help them return to the right path and create opportunities for them to grow up in a healthy and beautiful way. Only then will the country move forward more beautifully,” he said.

Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Md. Aminul Islam, the event was attended, among others, by Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Nazran Rauf, Sirajganj district BNP General Secretary Saidur Rahman Bachchu, District Primary Education Officer, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamun Khan, teachers, students and guardians from different schools.
