DHAKA, May 14, 2026 (BSS) - The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has directed all government-aided and education board-affiliated institutions not to collect monthly tuition fees from students receiving merit and general scholarships.
The directive warned that legal and departmental action would be taken against heads of institutions if the order is violated.
In an official notification, DSHE instructed all educational institutions across the country to strictly comply with the decision.
DSHE Director General Prof Dr Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel confirmed the matter to BSS today.
According to the directive, students receiving government merit and general scholarships will be allowed to study without paying tuition fees.
No approved educational institution will be permitted to demand monthly fees from such students.
It further stated that collecting tuition fees from scholarship holders would considered a violation of regulations, leading to disciplinary and legal action against the responsible institution heads.
Under the Education Ministry's policy, scholarships are awarded based on JSC, JDC and SSC results, providing both monthly stipends and an annual lump-sum grant, with funds directly deposited into students' bank accounts.
Copies of the directive have been sent to all education boards, the University Grants Commission (UGC), government and private colleges, medical and engineering institutions, and district and upazila education offices for implementation.
