DHAKA, May 14, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj today said the government is considering the education sector as a national investment.
“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has made it clear in his election manifesto that he will give top priority to education. To implement that goal, emphasis has been put on strengthening primary education,” he said.
The state minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting titled 'Remedial Education: Work-Experience and Future Thoughts', organised by the Mass Literacy Campaign, at the conference room of Bangladesh Tourism Corporation in Agargaon in Dhaka.
He said the desired learning skills have not yet been achieved in the country's primary education.
Although many students are present in the classrooms, a large part of them are not able to acquire class-appropriate skills, Bobby Hajjaj said.
He said the government is taking a special action plan to move backward students forward.
The state minister said the government’s goal is to strengthen the basic learning foundation of pre-primary and primary level children aged four to 10 years.
But, he said, the reality is that even though many students are in class-III, they have not been able to acquire the skills required for that grade.
According to the National Student Assessment (NSA), about 50 percent of students are lagging behind, he added.
Bobby Hajjaj said special support programmes will be launched for students who are dropping out or are not able to keep up in class.
Plans are being made to reduce the learning deficit of students through learning circles, community involvement, parental participation and the use of technology-based content, he said.
Eminent educationist Rasheda K Chowdhury presided over the meeting.
Representatives of different local and foreign NGOs, including Save the Children, were present at the event, a handout said.
