Govt moves to set up Cumilla WASA for improved civic amenities

DHAKA, May 13, 2026 (BSS)– The government has taken a policy decision to establish Cumilla Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to ensure modern, sustainable and efficient water management services for residents of Cumilla city.

The decision came at an inter-ministerial meeting held today at the conference room of the Local Government Division at the Secretariat here.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir chaired the meeting.

The meeting highlighted the growing need for safe drinking water, a modern sewerage system and long-term urban management in Cumilla in the context of rapid urbanisation and growing population.

Addressing the meeting, the minister said the establishment of Cumilla WASA is a timely initiative aimed at building an effective and modern water management system for the city’s residents.

He directed the concerned ministries, departments and agencies to work in close coordination and expedite the required processes for establishing the authority.

The minister also stressed the importance of adopting planned and sustainable measures to ensure uninterrupted supply of safe water and improved civic services for urban dwellers.

Cumilla-6 lawmaker Monirul Haque Chowdhury, Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan, Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Yusuf Molla Tipu and senior officials from the relevant ministries and departments attended the meeting.
