1,771 votes cast on first day of SCBA polls

DHAKA, May 13, 2026 (BSS) - A total of 1,771 votes were cast out of 11,097 voters on the first day of the two-day election of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for the 2026-2027 term today.

The voting began at 10am at the SCBA auditorium and continued till 5:30pm with a one-hour break from 1pm to 2pm.

The election is being held for 14 posts—one president, two vice-presidents, one secretary, one treasurer, two joint secretaries and seven members.

From the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum’s “Blue Panel”, Senior Advocate Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokon is contesting for the post of president. 

Md Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md Shahjahan are contesting for the two vice-president posts while Mohammad Ali is running for secretary and Md Ziaur Rahman for treasurer posts. 

Maksud Ullah and Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul are contesting for the posts of assistant secretary. Candidates for member posts from Blue Panel are: AKM Azad Hossain, HM Sanzid Siddiqui, Md Kabir Hossain, Md Tipu Sultan, Md Zia Uddin Mia, Ripon Kumar Barua and Wahid Afroz Chowdhury.

From the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed “Green Panel”, Abdul Baten is contesting for the president post while Abdul Haque and Moinuddin Faruqui are running for two vice-president posts. 

AKM Rezaul Karim Khondaker is contesting for secretary and SM Jahangir Alam for treasurer posts. Md Tarikul Islam and Zobayer Ahmad Bhuiyan are contesting for the two posts of assistant secretary. 

Candidates for member posts are: Azim Uddin Patwari, Farzana Khanam, Israt Jahan Oni, Md Fayezullah, Md Jubayer Titu, Mahmudul Hasan and Mohammad Naeem Uddin Lincoln. 

The NCP-backed “Red-Green Panel” has announced a partial panel this year. From the panel, Azmal Hossain Bacchu is contesting for the post of secretary while Mostafa Asgar Sharifi is running for the assistant secretary post.

Candidates for member posts are: Amina Akter Lovely, Kazi Akbar Ali, Md Bani Amin and Mazharul Islam. 

Moreover, independent candidate Yunus Ali Akand is contesting for the post of president outside any panel. 

Candidates for secretary post are: Farhad Uddin Bhuiyan, Md Abu Yahia Dulal, Md Omar Faruk and Mohammad Ashraf Uz-Zaman Khan. 

Besides, Md Zobayer Tayeb and Tapan Kumar Das are contesting for the member post.

Justice Md Miftah Uddin Chowdhury is serving as the convener of the election sub-committee.
