Wolbachia method in consideration to strengthen dengue control efforts: Sakhawat

DHAKA, May 6, 2026 (BSS) - Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has said the piloting project to strengthen dengue control efforts through the Wolbachia method is in consideration. 

A high-level meeting was held today at the conference room of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to discuss strengthening dengue control efforts through the Wolbachia method. 

The World Mosquito Program (WMP), headquartered at Monash University in Australia, had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Bangladesh in December 2025 to support the implementation of this evidence-based intervention in Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Dr. Claudia Surjadjaja, Director of Advocacy and External Relations WMP presented the proposed implementation plan for the Wolbachia intervention starting in Dhaka North.
      
Health Minister welcomed the collaboration between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOH&FW) and WMP and emphasized the urgency of accelerating preparations as the dengue season approaches. 

The Minister directed the concerned officials to work closely with WMP in developing the technical and financial plan required for implementation.
      
WMP reaffirmed its commitment to providing technical support and assisting in mobilizing donor support for the successful implementation of the project in Bangladesh.
      
The meeting reflects the Government of Bangladesh's continued commitment to exploring innovative and evidence-based approaches to reduce the burden of dengue and strengthen public health preparedness.
