DHAKA, May 1, 2026 (BSS) – The 75-megawatt Sonagazi Solar Power Plant in Feni is significantly strengthening Bangladesh’s national grid while accelerating economic activities, particularly in and around the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ).
Constructed by the Electricity Generation Bangladesh PLC with financial support from the World Bank and the Bangladesh government, the plant has emerged as a reliable source of clean energy since it began supplying electricity to the grid in April 2024.
Located in Sonagazi Upazila Purba Borodhali and Charchandia area, the solar facility has a generation capacity of 75 MW (AC) and 96.34 MW (DC).
Electricity generated from the plant is transmitted through a 230 kV line to the Mirsarai grid substation, operated by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh, ensuring stable power supply to key industrial zones.
Officials mentioned that the plant is already playing a crucial role in enhancing grid stability, improving voltage profiles, and reducing transmission losses.
The addition of renewable energy has also helped minimize load shedding, making the power system more reliable for industrial, commercial, and residential users, they noted.
The impact is particularly visible in the nearby Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA)-managed economic zones, including the rapidly growing industrial hub in Mirsarai.
With uninterrupted electricity supply, factories are now operating more efficiently, while new industries continue to be established in the zone.
Executive Engineer Nuruddin Md Farhad of the Mirsarai grid substation said the solar plant has enhanced the capacity to deliver uninterrupted electricity to factories within the NSEZ, contributing to smoother industrial operations.
BEZA Executive Member Saleh Ahmed noted that electricity demand in the economic zones is rising steadily with the influx of new industries.
“This solar power plant is playing an important role in meeting that growing demand,” he said, adding that further solar projects are being planned to support future expansion.
Beyond industrial growth, Executive Engineer of the 75-megawatt Sonagazi Solar Power Plant Md Mohiuddin said, the plant is contributing to broader economic development by facilitating new business opportunities, including small and cottage industries, and generating employment in the area.
He also highlighted that the project has strengthened Bangladesh’s shift toward renewable energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions.
With its dual role in reinforcing the national grid and catalyzing economic activities, the Sonagazi Solar Power Plant is being viewed as a milestone in the country’s journey toward sustainable and inclusive growth.
