US envoy discusses wheat import issue with state minister for food

DHAKA, April 21, 2026 (BSS) – US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen today paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Food Md. Abdul Bari at his Secretariat office here.

Issues of bilateral interests, including the import of wheat from the United States, were discussed in the meeting, said a press release.

Bangladesh has already initiated wheat imports from the US on a G2G (Government-to-Government) basis. In the 2025-‘26 fiscal more than 700,000 tonnes of wheat were imported from the United States. 

The state minister expressed satisfaction and thanked those involved as the imported wheat shipments arrived in the country within the scheduled time despite the current global context.

The US envoy also thanked the state minister and expressed the hope for increasing cooperation to enhance trade between the two countries and for the welfare of the people of both nations.

US Embassy’s Political and Economic Affairs Counselor Eric Geelan and Embassy’s Economic Officer D Richard Rasmussen accompanied the US ambassador in the meeting.

 Food Secretary Md. Firoz Sarker and officials concerned of the ministry were present, among others.
