BHOLA, April 18, 2026 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, today said the present government is working to establish democracy and good governance in the country.
He said democracy triumphed through the July Mass Uprising while the people of Bangladesh had not experienced democracy over the past 20 years. "There is no effective alternative to a democratic system for development in today's world," he added.
The speaker made the remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting with district administration officials, political leaders, media personnel and members of civil society at the Bhola Circuit House here, at the end of his three-day visit to the district.
He said the people of Bangladesh are politically aware and do not accept authoritarian rule. Despite repression, including enforced disappearances and killings, people took to the streets and re-established democracy.
Referring to the 2024 Mass Uprising, he said the movement drew global attention and brought pride to the nation. Although some global powers attempt to undermine Bangladesh as a developing country, the people's struggle for democracy has enhanced the country's global dignity, he added.
On human rights, the speaker said that while violations occur regularly around the world, the people of Bangladesh have established human rights firmly.
Expressing hope, he said the elected government, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, will bring happiness and prosperity to the people and continue working towards economic development.
He said the government is working to ensure good governance and the rule of law regardless of political affiliation, emphasizing that no one should face harassment due to political ideology.
Hafiz Uddin Ahmed also noted that a healthy relationship now exists among political parties, allowing people to breathe a sigh of relief after a long time. A credible election has been held, and the government is functioning in line with public expectations, he added.
Earlier, the Speaker was accorded a guard of honour upon his arrival at the Circuit House. After the meeting, he left for Dhaka via Barishal.
Officials present at the meeting included Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr Shamim Rahman, Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah Kawsar, District Council Administrator Md Golam Nabi Alamgir and BNP district member secretary, among others.
