RANGPUR, April 11, 2026 (BSS) - The second four-day Shaheed Abu Sayeed Book
Fair-2026 in memory of martyr Abu Sayeed, a student of the 12th batch of the
English Department of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), begins here
tomorrow.
Abu Sayeed was martyred in police firing while taking part in the indomitable
anti-discrimination student movement on July 16, 2024 in front of the
university.
His martyrdom sparked mass protests across the country, turning the anti-
discrimination student movement into a student-people's uprising and
overthrowing the fascist regime of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and
forcing her to flee the country on August 5, 2024.
This book fair will be held at the Independence Memorial Ground on the
university campus from April 12 to April 15 at the initiative of the
university administration.
Convener of the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Book Fair-2026 organising committee Dr Md
Moniruzzaman gave this information to reporters after attending a view-
sharing meeting held at the university's administrative building on Saturday.
Other members of the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Book Fair-2026 organising committee,
students, publishing houses and representatives of various organisations were
present at the exchange of views.
Shaheed Abu Sayeed's father Md Maqbul Hossain will inaugurate the Shaheed Abu
Sayeed Book Fair-2026.
BRUR Vice-chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali will attend the
inaugural function of the book fair as the chief guest.
At this time, Dr Md Moniruzzaman said, in view of the ongoing energy crisis
in the country, it has been decided to keep the book fair running from 1:30
pm to 6 pm every day as per the government's instructions.
In addition, the book fair will continue from 10 am to 6 pm on April 14 on
the occasion of Pahela Baishakh.
He said that in addition to discussion programmes, writer's chats,
recitations and book reviews, children's drawing competitions and cultural
programmes will be organised at the book fair every day.
Talking to BSS, a student of the Bengali Department of BRUR and then
coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement Shamsur Rahman Suman
said that this book fair has started a cultural journey in the new Bangladesh
achieved through the supreme sacrifice of Shaheed Abu Sayeed.
