BNP wins Bogura-6, Sherpur-3 by landslide

DHAKA, April 9, 2026 (BSS)- In the by-election for Bogura-6 constituency, BNP candidate Rezaul Karim Badsha has emerged victorious in unofficial results while in the general election for Sherpur-3 constituency, his party colleague Mahmudul Haque Rubel has been unofficially elected. 

Their closest competitors in these two constituencies were Abidur Rahman Sohel and Masudur Rahman, respectively, both backed by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. 

The final results were officially announced tonight by the respective returning officers of Bogura and Sherpur districts. 

In the Bogura-6 by-election, out of 151 centers including postal ballots, Rezaul Karim Badsha, contesting with the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol, secured 133,931 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat-backed candidate Abidur Rahman Sohel, received 57,159 votes. 

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Development Party candidate Md Al-Amin Talukder got 499 votes. 

According to Bogura's Senior District Election Officer and Returning Officer Md. Fazlul Karim, the voter turnout in the by-election, including postal ballots, was 42.57%. 

The constituency has a total of 450,307 voters, with 150 polling centers and 835 booths. Around 191,000 voters cast their votes during the election. 

The Election Commission stated that voting was conducted peacefully from morning till afternoon. 

On the other hand, in Sherpur-3 constituency, based on final results from 128 centers including postal ballots, Mahmudul Haque Rubel, also with the 'Sheaf of Paddy' symbol, secured 166,117 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Masudur Rahman, contesting with the 'Daripalla' (Weighing Scale) symbol, received 47,051 votes. 

Additionally, Md. Mizanur Rahman of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) received 480 votes. 

Sherpur District Election Officer and Returning Officer Md Jahangir Hossain told BSS that the voter turnout in this constituency was 52.19%. A total of 215,734 voters exercised their voting rights. 

Responding to a question about the election environment, he said voting was conducted in a very peaceful and orderly manner, with only a few isolated incidents. No polling centers were suspended or declared closed. 

Earlier, in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad Election held on February 12, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman was elected from both Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies. Later, he vacated the Bogura-6 seat, making the by-election necessary.

Meanwhile, the Sherpur-3 election was postponed on February 3 following the death of Jamaat candidate Nuruzzaman Badal after the election schedule had been announced. 

Subsequently, the Election Commission announced new schedules for the by-election and general election in the two constituencies.
