DHAKA, April 7, 2026 (BSS) - Professor Dr Sumangal Barua, a former senior teacher of the Pali and Buddhist Studies Department at Dhaka University, passed away in the capital due to old-age complications. He was 86.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a large number of relatives, colleagues, students, and well-wishers, who have expressed deep sorrow at his death.
Dr Sumangal authored several research-based books on Buddhist religion and made notable contributions to the field of Pali and Buddhist studies.
His body was kept at the Arts Faculty premises of the university at 10 am today to allow people to pay their last respects.
Later, it was taken to the International Buddhist Monastery at noon and subsequently to the Dharmarajika Bouddha Bihar in the afternoon for further rites.
