JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Apr 6, 2026 (BSS) - A daylong training on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) was held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) today under the initiative titled "Youth-Focused Media and Information Literacy for Building an Informed Bangladesh."
The workshop was organised at the seminar hall of Wazed Miah Science Research Centre on the campus, aiming to enhance students' awareness and skills in handling information in the digital age.
Professor Md. Jamal Uddin of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Director of the Students Counselling and Guidance Centre attended the programme as a guest. Professor Dr. Md. Monwar Hossain of the Department of Zoology, also a noted wildlife and environmental researcher, was present, among others.
The training sessions were conducted by Master Trainers - Professor Dr. Sakiba Yasmin of the Pharmacy Department, Associate Professor Ameena Islam of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies and Associate Professor M. Salahuddin Bhuiyan of the Pharmacy Department. Students from different departments of the university took part in the training.
The sessions focused on ensuring responsible use of information in the era of rapid technological advancement, with emphasis on combating misinformation and rumours.
Key discussions included responsible use of social media in the age of artificial intelligence, protection of personal data and privacy, and the role of media literacy in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The programme was supported by UNESCO, MILNetBD and the UN electoral project, with international partners including Australian Aid, Japan, Norway, Sweden and UK International Development.
At the end of the training, participants were briefed about the "Student Social Action Fellowship," which will enable them to apply their knowledge in promoting social awareness at the grassroots level.
