DHAKA, March 31, 2026 (BSS) - Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Minister Professor Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain has urged doctors to come forward with a spirit of service to provide treatment to people.

"We have a responsibility towards the people of the country. Therefore, doctors should come forward with a service-oriented mentality," he said while speaking as the chief guest at the concluding session of a conference here.

The first International Heart Failure Conference titled 'Bridge the gap between Drugs, Devices and Surgery in Heart Failure' was organised jointly by the Heart Failure Division of Bangladesh Medical University and the Bangladesh Cardiac Society at a city hotel on Monday, a handout said.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain also spoke at the meeting as the special guest. The conference was presided over by Professor Dr Md Shafiuddin, convener of the Bangladesh Cardiac Society.

In his speech, Zahid Hossain said the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) was first established in Bangladesh under the leadership of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for the treatment of heart disease, which was later transformed into a full-fledged institute and is currently running as one of the main specialised hospitals for heart disease treatment.

Referring to the election promise of the incumbent government, he said the government is committed to ensuring healthcare for the population of Bangladesh.

The government's healthcare structure for preventing and treating both communicable and non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, should be made more effective, integrated and people-oriented so that medical services reach the grassroots level of the country, Zahid Hossain said.

In his speech as a special guest, Sakhawat Husain said doctors, pharmaceutical companies and the government must work together to ensure public health services.

Terming the medical profession a noble one, he said the greatness of this profession gives them a different status from others in society.

He called upon doctors to stand by the patients with a sense of humanity and provide services.

He sought cooperation of doctors for the overall development of the country's health sector.
