EC seeks holiday for Bogura-6, Sherpur-3 by-polls

DHAKA, Mar 30, 2026 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) has requested the Ministry of Public Administration to declare a general holiday in Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 parliamentary seats on the Election Day.

A letter in this regard, signed by EC Secretariat Deputy Secretary Mohammad Monir Hossain, was sent to the Senior Secretary of the Ministry on Sunday.

According to the letter, voting for the vacant seat of Bogura-6 and the Sherpur-3 constituency under the 13th National Parliament will be held on April 9. To ensure that voters can exercise their franchise, a general holiday is deemed necessary in all government, semi-government, autonomous and private offices and institutions within the election areas.

The EC has requested the authorities to take necessary steps to declare the holiday.

Returning Officer for Bogura-6 Md. Fazlul Karim said that three candidates are contesting in the by-election in this constituency. They are: Md. Rezaul Karim Badsha from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), contesting with the “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol, Md. Abdur Rahman from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, contesting with the ‘Scale’ symbol and another candidate from Bangladesh Development Party contesting with the “Cauliflower” symbol.

He added that the overall election environment in the constituency is satisfactory.

Notably, in the February 12 parliamentary election, BNP Chairperson and current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman won the Bogura-6 seat. However, as holding two parliamentary seats simultaneously is not permitted, he retained Dhaka-17 and vacated Bogura-6, leading to the by-election.

Returning Officer for Sherpur-3 by-election Mohammad Jahangir Hossain stated that three candidates are contesting in this constituency. They are: Md. Mahmudul Haque Rubel (BNP) with ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol, Md. Masudur Rahman (Jamaat-e-Islami) with ‘Scale’ symbol and another candidate from the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) with ‘Scissor’ symbol.

Earlier, the election in this constituency was postponed after the death of a Jamaat candidate during the February 12 polls. A fresh schedule was later announced.
