DHAKA, Mar 17, 2026 (BSS) - Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir today said that all units of the police department will be deployed to ensure a smooth, safe and hassle-free journey for people traveling home during Eid.
“There would be no compromise with any wrongdoing in this regard,” he made the remarks here this morning after visiting the Gabtoli Bus Terminal.
He noted that homebound passengers often face many difficulties during Eid travel, including being stuck on roads for hours. Many people who start their journey even a day before Eid fail to reach their destinations on time.
To ensure a smooth Eid journey this year, he said the government has held coordination meetings to prevent passenger harassment, stop overcharging for tickets and reduce traffic congestion on highways.
The police forces have been working seriously to improve the road and traffic management, Ali Hossain said adding that many times drivers and helpers do not follow traffic rules.
If they become more aware and comply with the law, traffic congestion can be reduced significantly, he observed.
Responding to a query from journalists, the IGP said bus terminals often attract various groups including drug users and snatchers. Therefore, all police units will remain deployed to ensure the safety and smooth movement of passengers during Eid travel.
Regarding illegal long-distance bus counters in the capital, he said such counters will not be allowed to operate within Dhaka city and joint efforts are needed to remove them. “We will eliminate these through legal measures,” he added.
During the visit the IGP was accompanied by Acting Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md. Sarwar and other senior police officials.
