DHAKA, Mar 12, 2026 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan today said the government is committed to protecting the country's cable television industry and the entrepreneurs involved in the sector.
"Ensuring protection for any legitimate business initiative is our responsibility. Through proper coordination among stakeholders, we will work to resolve the existing problems in this industry," he told an iftar programme organised by the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) at Dhaka Ladies Club this afternoon.
The information minister said there is no scope to ignore the cable industry and television sector in the modern communication system.
"From submarine cable connectivity to delivering connections to households at the grassroots level, the investment and initiatives taken by entrepreneurs in this sector are highly commendable," he said.
"As the information minister, it is my duty to understand the problems faced by all parties involved in the industry and find a sustainable solution," he added.
Referring to technological challenges and piracy, the minister said piracy on internet-based platforms, including IP TV and online services, has become a global challenge in the digital era.
"To safeguard the interests of legitimate businesses and the government, it is essential to establish a strong legal framework," he said.
The minister noted that while the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) would carry out regulatory oversight as mandated by the state, the legitimate rights of entrepreneurs must also be ensured.
"I believe that if a healthy understanding or 'happy marriage' is established between the two sides, neither party will suffer," he added.
The minister also expressed interest in expert-level reviews to address the complexities of the technology-driven sector and urged association leaders to present their issues to the ministry in a well-structured way.
He assured that a permanent structural solution would be sought through a tripartite meeting involving the BTRC, the ministry and other stakeholders.
Reassuring business leaders, the minister said the government always works to protect lawful business initiatives and ensure security for investors in the sector.
Member of Parliament Shofiqul Haque Milon of Rajshahi-3 constituency, leaders of the association including its president and general secretary, and other members were present at the programme.
