Dhaka seeks UNGA presidency support from Denmark, Germany

DHAKA, Mar 11, 2026 (BSS) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today sought support from Denmark and Germany for Bangladesh’s candidature for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly for the 2026–2027 term.

The issue came up when Ambassador of Denmark Christian Brix Møller and Ambassador of Germany Dr Rüdiger Lotz paid separate courtesy calls on the state minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka. 

The ambassadors congratulated the state minister on assuming office and expressed optimism that bilateral relations between Bangladesh and their respective countries would further strengthen under the present government.

During the meetings, the state minister acknowledged the longstanding development cooperation of Denmark and Germany with Bangladesh across key sectors.

The discussions explored opportunities for expanding cooperation in areas including trade and investment, climate action, renewable energy, development partnership, skills development, manpower mobility and migration.

The two sides also discussed prospects for initiating negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union.

During the meetings, the state minister reiterated that a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis lies in the safe, voluntary, early and dignified repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.

Both meetings concluded with expressions of satisfaction over the steady progress of Bangladesh’s relations with Denmark and Germany, with the envoys reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening the longstanding and mutually beneficial partnerships.
