DHAKA, Feb 10, 2026 (BSS) - BNP today called on the Election Commission (EC) to play a firm and lawful role in ensuring that the upcoming national parliamentary elections are held in a fair, free, impartial and peaceful manner.
BNP standing committee member and Chairman of the party's Election Steering Committee, Nazrul Islam Khan, made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasiruddin at the Election Building in Agargaon.
"The long-awaited national election is scheduled for February 12. We have requested the Election Commission to strictly fulfill its legal responsibilities so that the election is conducted in a free, fair, impartial and peaceful environment," he said.
Nazrul Islam Khan alleged that some individuals, considering themselves highly powerful, are making irresponsible remarks, which he said violate the electoral code of conduct and go against the country's social norms. "Everyone must act in accordance with electoral laws and the code of conduct, and these must be strictly monitored and enforced," he added.
The veteran BNP leader stressed that the Election Commission's role must not create any perception of bias toward any particular party or candidate.
Regarding the overall electoral atmosphere, he said there had been no indication so far that the election process would be obstructed. "There is still one day left. Those participating in the election have been part of the struggle to restore democracy. We believe they will refrain from any actions that could disrupt the election," he said.
Based on the party's experience during the campaign, he expressed confidence that the election would be free and fair. "By the grace of Allah, Insha'Allah, our party and candidates will win with a huge majority," he added.
On the issue of ballot box transportation, Nazrul Islam Khan noted that many polling centres are located in remote areas, making it difficult in some cases to deliver ballot boxes on the morning of polling day. He said the BNP has demanded that, alongside the use of transparent ballot boxes, the boxes should not remain under the personal custody of presiding officers but instead be kept in open areas in front of polling agents.
Responding to questions about possible militant threats, he said that the issue of militancy is sometimes exaggerated for political reasons. "Preventing militancy requires not only law enforcement but also public awareness and resistance," he said, expressing hope that people would resist any attempt to disrupt the election.
He also thanked the media for its role in safeguarding democracy, human rights, and the country's independence and sovereignty, expressing hope that such cooperation would continue.
During the meeting, discussions were held with Chief Election Commissioner A. M. M. Nasiruddin and EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed. The BNP delegation included Chairman's Advisory Council member and Election Steering Committee member Ismail Zabihullah, Election Steering Committee team leader Dr. Zakaria, and BNP Media Cell member Shyhrul Kabir Khan.
