EU polls observation team meets Ali Riaz

DHAKA, Feb 9, 2026 (BSS) - A delegation of the European Union election observation mission today met Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Professor Ali Riaz.

The six-member delegation led by its Chief Observer and Member of the European Parliament Ivars Ijabs met Prof Riaz at the Chief Adviser's Office in Tejgaon this evening.

Prof Riaz told the delegation that the interim government has undertaken reform initiatives to uphold the spirit of the July mass uprising and advance Bangladesh's democratic transition.

Professor Riaz said the government's reform initiatives aim to make the country's democratic journey smooth and meaningful, while safeguarding the rights of the people. The EU delegation sought updates on the upcoming referendum, reform measures, and constitutional restructuring.

He noted that the July Charter was adopted after nearly nine months of discussions with political parties across the country, adding that all participating parties have signed the charter. Professor Riaz, who is also the Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, expressed optimism about its implementation.

Seeking continued European Union support, he said Bangladesh's efforts toward democratic transition would benefit from international cooperation.

The EU delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh's democratic transition, emphasizing the EU's respect for democracy and freedom of expression. The Chief Observer of the EU Polls Observation Mission expressed support for the interim government's reform agenda and the planned referendum.

He said Bangladesh would embark on a new democratic journey through the upcoming elections and expressed hope that relations between a democratic Bangladesh and the European Union would further strengthen in the future.
