70.92pc work on metro rail Kamalapur section completed

DHAKA, Feb 5, 2026 (BSS) – The extended Kamalapur section of the metro rail was 70.92 percent complete as of January 31, and authorities aim to finish the 1.16-kilometre stretch by next year.

“The physical work on the Motijheel-to-Kamalapur section of the Dhaka Metro Rail project has progressed rapidly,” Project Director of Metro Line-6, retired Brigadier General Md Abdul Wahab, told BSS here today.

He said electric devices such as automated doors, the signaling system and other equipment will be brought next year, adding, “The section is expected to commence commercial operations in April or May next year.”

“Track installation work will be completed within the next two to three months,” the project director said.

Earlier, Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTC) Faruque Ahmed said the Kamalapur section will open on January 1, 2027, as system and track preparation work is progressing in full swing.

According to the metro project, as of December 2025, all 177 piles, pile caps, piers and station columns have been completed.

Besides, all precast parapet walls have been installed, while the station’s steel roof structure and steel erection work have been completed, it said.

Project details show that 2,800 square metres of brick wall and plaster work at the concourse level have been completed.

The project authorities are carrying out intensive construction activities, including agreements for installing electrical and mechanical systems.

Meanwhile, the government has saved Taka 185 crore from electro-mechanical work on the metro rail, particularly on the Motijheel-Kamalapur section.

As of December 31, 2025, the overall progress of the Uttara North–Motijheel section reached 99.97 percent, while the Motijheel-Kamalapur section recorded 69.85 percent.

The total length of Bangladesh’s first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line, running from Diabari–Uttara–Mirpur–Agargaon–Farmgate–Shahbagh–Dhaka University–Motijheel–Kamalapur, is 21.26 kilometres. Commercial operation of the metro rail from Uttara to Motijheel began in November 2023.
