DHAKA, Feb 3, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh has achieved a major milestone in medical science with the successful performance of a combined Pectus Excavatum and Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) surgery on a single patient for the first time in the country.

The landmark procedure was carried out on the first day of the two-day 'Pectus Workshop 2026' at Green Life Hospital in the capital.

Physicians said such a complex combined surgery had never been performed in Bangladesh before, marking a significant breakthrough in thoracic surgery.

The rare surgery was conducted on a 16-year-old boy on Monday.

He had been suffering from congenital Pectus Excavatum, a condition in which the chest wall sinks inward and may affect heart and lung function.

He was also affected by hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, which severely disrupted his daily life.

A joint team of Bangladeshi doctors and specialists from Thailand successfully performed the procedure.

Doctors said the simultaneous surgeries resolved two major physical problems while significantly reducing anesthesia-related risks and post-operative complications.

The initiative was patronised by eminent thoracic surgeon Professor Dr. A. K. M. Razzaque.

Associate Professor Dr Sira Laohathai, a renowned thoracic surgeon from Vajira Hospital in Thailand, participated as an international faculty member.

The workshop and surgery were supervised and coordinated by Dr Tajdit Rahman Tanim, Consultant of Thoracic Surgery at Green Life Hospital.

On the second day of the workshop today, another successful pectus surgery was performed, alongside a special academic session on modern pectus surgery techniques.

On the same day, Green Life Chest Wall Clinic was formally inaugurated to provide specialised care for complex chest wall disorders.

Medical experts said the initiative will enable advanced treatment within the country and reduce the need for patients to seek care abroad.
