RAJSHAHI, Jan 30, 2026 (BSS) - Rajshahi University (RU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib today said the Institute of Bangladesh Studies (IBS) is a unique and pioneering research institution dedicated to studies on Bangladesh.
Speaking as chief guest at the opening ceremony of the two-day Golden Jubilee of IBS and its 15th Triennial Alumni Conference at the RU Senate Bhaban, he said the institute was established after independence to conduct research and guide the country's socio-economic development.
The VC noted that over the past 50 years, IBS has produced hundreds of advanced research works and earned recognition at home and abroad. However, he expressed concern that only a small number of graduates continue research after completing their degrees, urging researchers to go beyond degree-oriented academic activities.
He said many IBS graduates have held and continue to hold senior positions nationally and internationally, making the institute a respected name in Bangladesh-focused research worldwide.
Acknowledging challenges faced by the institute, Professor Naqib expressed hope that the IBS Alumni Association would play a more proactive role in strengthening the institution.
He also said there are wide opportunities for IBS to conduct state-relevant research, adding that science and technology have not received adequate attention in the institute's research over the years.
Pro Vice-Chancellors Professor Mohammad Main Uddin and Professor Farid Uddin Khan attended the programme as special guests. The event was chaired by IBS Director Professor M. Mostafa Kamal.
Bandarban University Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Muhibullah Siddiqui delivered speech on the Golden Jubilee of the IBS.
Alumni Association President Professor Md. Fazlul Haque delivered the welcome address while General Secretary Professor Md. Kamruzzaman offered the vote of thanks.
