DHAKA, Jan 21, 2026 (BSS) – The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 today allowed a plea filed by Abul Kalam Azad, who was convicted and sentenced to death by the then International Crimes Tribunal in 2013 for crimes against humanity committed in 1971, seeking certified copies of the verdict and other relevant documents.

The three-member ICT-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order as Azad appeared before the tribunal and filed the plea. Advocate Moshiul Alam moved the petition on his behalf.

“As per a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs by order of the President, the sentence of Abul Kalam Azad remains suspended. Therefore, the tribunal today did not pass any order on his release petition. However, it directed that certified copies of the verdict and related documents be supplied to him to enable him to file an appeal against the judgment with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court,” Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told BSS.

Abul Kalam Azad was convicted in the maiden judgment delivered by the then ICT for committing heinous crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation. He was tried in absentia and found guilty on seven charges of crimes against humanity.

Azad went into hiding a few hours before the then ICT issued an arrest warrant against him on April 3, 2012.
