GOPALGANJ, Jan 21, 2026 (BSS) - Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) on Tuesday awarded merit scholarships to 475 students to encourage excellence in education and research.
The scholarships were given to students who secured first, second and third positions in different semesters across 33 departments of the university. The cheque distribution ceremony was held at the university’s tennis court in the afternoon.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Hossain Uddin Shekhar attended the programme as the chief guest, while Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Sohel Hasan and Treasurer Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazmul Ahsan were present as special guests.
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman and President of the Department of Physics Professor Dr. Md. Shahjahan also addressed the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Hossain Uddin Shekhar said despite various limitations, the university is taking initiatives to improve its academic standing and ranking.
He said that around Taka 17 lakh was distributed among meritorious students at the programme and a total of Taka 35 lakh would be given as scholarships in the current academic year.
He further announced that from now on, first-position holders at the undergraduate level in all faculties and departments would receive the Vice-Chancellor’s Award and the Dean’s Award.
He also said steps were being taken to establish a scholarship desk soon to assist students in obtaining various scholarships at home and abroad.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Sohel Hasan, in his speech, congratulated the scholarship recipients and said that scholarships are the recognition of students’ achievements. He encouraged students to move forward through dedication, hard work and perseverance.
Deans of different faculties, heads of departments, university proctors and scholarship recipients were present at the ceremony.
