EC restores candidacy of 51 aspirants, cancels 15, postpones 3

DHAKA, Jan 10, 2026 (BSS)- A total of 51 aspirants have got their candidacy back as the Election Commission (EC) accepted their appeal for validation of their nominations for running in the forthcoming 13th national election.

The EC has accepted 52 appeals against acceptance and rejection of the nomination papers by the returning officers.

Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat Md Akhter Ahmed told this to journalists today at Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon here.

Of the remaining appeals, 15 were cancelled and three were postponed due to discrepancies in the information, he said.

“One of the appeals will be heard at 5pm tomorrow, while two others have been deferred until January 16. These appeals have information discrepancies and to be resolved by the returning officers,” he said.

EC Director (Public Relations) Ruhul Amin Mallik said EC overturned the nomination of one aspirant whose papers had earlier been accepted by returning officer. 

The appeal hearings began at 10am and continued until 5pm before the full Election Commission, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, at the EC auditorium.

The Commission accepted appeals from candidates who were able to submit the required documents and rejected those who failed to meet the criteria.

On the first day today, the EC heard first 70 appeals. Appeals with the serial number 71 to 140 will be heard tomorrow. Appeals with serial number from 141 to 210 will be heard on Monday and from 211 to 280 will be resolved Tuesday. The hearing schedule of the remaining appeals will be announced later.

In total, 645 appeals have been filed after the EC initially cancelled 723 nomination papers out of 2,568 submitted for 300 constituencies. The Commission had earlier declared 1,842 nominations valid.
