DHAKA, Jan 5, 2026 (BSS) –Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin today said the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) cannot be inaugurated during the tenure of the interim government.
He made the remarks while responding to a question at a press conference held at the Secretariat here.
The press conference was organised marking the promulgation of the Civil Aviation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, and the Bangladesh Travel Agency (Registration and Control) Amendment Ordinance, 2025.
Replying to a journalist’s query on whether the third terminal could be opened under the current government, the adviser said it would not be possible despite best efforts.
He said the government made extensive attempts to bring the terminal into operation, including negotiations and meetings with the Japanese vice minister.
“We tried our utmost, but our efforts have not been successful,” he added.
The adviser said work is now underway to activate the procedural requirements necessary for commissioning the terminal and to complete preparatory processes for future operations.
He noted that the final decision on opening the terminal would be taken by the next government.
Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism Nasreen Jahan was also present at the press conference.
