KHULNA, Jan 4, 2026 (BSS) – A tigress trapped in a deer-hunting snare laid by poachers in the Sundarbans was rescued by the Forest Department this afternoon and taken to Khulna for treatment.
The animal was rescued around 4pm after nearly two hours of continuous effort. The tigress was first tranquilised and then safely freed from the trap, Depon Chandra Das, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) of the Chandpai Range under the East Sundarbans Division, said.
Forest officials said that on Saturday at noon, officers and staff of the Chandpai Range of the East Sundarbans spotted the tigress caught in a snare in the Sorkar Khal area while on patrol.
All necessary preparations for the rescue were completed this morning before the operation began.
The rescue was conducted under the supervision of wildlife expert veterinarian Zulkar Naim from Gazipur Safari Park.
Officer-in-Charge of the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre of the East Sundarbans, Howlader Azad Kabir, said the tigress was initially sedated using special measures. After ensuring it was fully unconscious, the animal was rescued from the forest.
The tigress will receive treatment from specialist veterinary doctors in Khulna. If it fully recovers, it will be released back into the Sundarbans, Azad Kabir added.
