SIRAJGANJ, Jan 3, 2026 (BSS) –  Sirajganj witnessed intense cold as lowest temperature in the country was recorded in the district 9 degrees Celsius  disrupting normal life across the region. 

The cold wave, accompanied by dense fog and icy winds, has continued to disrupt normal life, particularly affecting public movement and daily activities.

According to the Meteorological Department, the impact of the ongoing winter season is most intensely felt in the northern and northwestern regions of the country. Sirajganj recorded the lowest temperature in the country today at 9 am, highlighting the severity of the chill in the area.

Earlier, on January 2, the minimum temperature in Jashore was recorded at 8°C, while the day before, it had been slightly lower at 7.8°C. Jashore had previously recorded the country’s lowest temperature for three consecutive days, but today, Sirajganj took the lead.

In Sirajganj, particularly in the char and rural areas, the bitter cold has left people struggling with daily life. Dense fog and the sharp winds have made it difficult for residents to go about their routines, and as a result, the number of people on the streets has sharply decreased. Many have refrained from leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary.

The situation is particularly dire for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and daily wage earners. Many in the area are at risk of contracting winter-related illnesses due to the lack of proper winter clothing. For the daily wage earners, the drop in work opportunities has further compounded their difficulties, as they struggle to meet basic needs in the face of declining incomes.

As the winter season continues, the Meteorological Department has warned that temperatures may drop even further in the coming days. The authorities have urged for greater preparations to be made, especially in winter-prone areas, to ensure that people have access to necessary clothing and support to combat the cold.

The government and local agencies have emphasized the importance of providing assistance to the most vulnerable, including the distribution of warm clothing and ensuring health services are available to those affected by the harsh conditions.

Winter in northern and northwestern Bangladesh remains intense, with a continuing challenge to maintain public health and daily activities amid the dropping temperatures.
