DHAKA, Jan 2, 2025 (BSS)- Nalchhiti Launch Ghat in Jhalakathi district has been named after Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi.
Adviser of the Ministry of Shipping and Labour and Employment Brigadier General (retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain today unveiled the name plaque at a ceremony in Nalchhiti.
Paying tribute to the memory of Shaheed Hadi, the adviser said he was a fearless fighter in the July mass uprising, a symbol of protesting youth, and spokesman of Inqilab Mancha.
“Naming the traditional launch ghat after Hadi, a proud son of Nalchhiti who sacrificed his life for the country and people would inspire future generations with patriotism, courage and responsibility,” he said.
The adviser further said, “Interim government is emphasizing on developing river communication infrastructure to connect marginal and remote island communities with mainstream development.”
He stressed that such infrastructural development would continue to improve the living standard of the coastal people.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has already completed renovation and modernization works of the Shaheed Osman Hadi Launch Ghat.
Local people from different walks of life expressed gratitude to the government for renaming the ghat, terming it a significant addition to Nalchhiti’s history that would raise awareness among the youth about justice, protest and citizens’ rights against domination.
Earlier, a Water Ambulance named ‘Shaheed Osman Hadi’ was handed over to Monpura Upazila administration in Bhola to ensure healthcare for coastal people.
Besides, the adviser inaugurated a newly constructed launch ghat at Durgapasha union in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal this morning.
He said the Ghat would make travel easier, safer and more affordable for locals, will contribute to the expansion of agriculture and trade.
BIWTA Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa, family members of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, officials of the Shipping Ministry and BIWTA, district and upazila administrations, and local dignitaries attended the ceremony.
